Importer Recordkeeping

Posted on: January 16th, 2011

Did you know that Customs requires you to also keep import records? Not only the broker has to maintain import records for 5 years from the date of entry but you do also. You must also keep your purchase orders, all Customs papers, invoices, receiving reports, distribution records, etc. You also must keep a log or otherwise be able to match up a Customs entry number to your specific shipment. When we invoice you, at the top of the Customs entry form is the entry number. You must keep some sort of log to match to your shipments. If Customs, FDA or any of the other 58 agencies involved in import have a question, they will provide the entry number alone. It is not the brokers job to maintain or look this up for you. We do not provide recordkeeping for our clients unless is it specificially contracted and paid for.
