Are you using a legal broker for your clearances? Do you even know what a legal broker is? A broker must be licensed by Customs & Border Protection, also known as CBP. It is a very hard test to pass and the rate of passing is usually around 5% each time it is given, which is usually twice a year. Only a licensed broker can clear shipment through Customs. Only a licensed broker can advise you what the duty rate will be for your shipment. Only a licensed broker can offer any advice on Customs matters. Freight forwarders cannot do any of these items legally. Protect youself and your business by asked for a licensed broker now!
To verify, ask your broker for a copy of their license. If they are really licensed, they will happily give it to you. Many freight forwarders pass themselves off as licensed brokers or one stop freight handlers, when in fact they are not. Some of those freight forwarders do actually hire licensed brokers like ourselves to handle their clearances. They do not hide the fact that they are subcontracing out to a licensed party. If they are hiding the fact they are not licensed or hiding the fact they are using a third party broker to clear your shipment, you have to wonder. What else are they hiding from you!
